Papers [manuscript]. 1912-1986.

The papers provide a record of van Praagh's long and distinguished career as a dancer, teacher, producer and director of ballet. They include personal and business correspondence, diaries, newscuttings, photographs, first night messages, theatre programs, greeting cards, postcards, journal articles, reports and other memorabilia. Personal correspondents include friends such as John (Jay) Sweet and also many messages of congratulations from admirers and fans. Business correspondents include J.C. Williamson and the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust. Added in August '01: 'Gala Performance', edited by Arnold Haskell, Mark Bonham Carter and Michael Wood ; with a foreward by H.R.H. The Princess Margaret. London : Collins, 1955. This 248 p. 'Record of the Sadler's Wells Ballet over twenty-five years' (cover title) is signed by Princess Margaret, and by members of the Ballet.

Dame Peggy van Praagh achieved prominence as a dancer, ballet teacher and director. She was born in London in 1910. She pursued a career of dance and joined the Ballet Club (later known as Ballet Rambert) in 1933 before moving to the Sadler's Wells Ballet (1941-1945). In 1959, she was invited to Australia to direct the Boranovsky Ballet. The Australian Ballet was formed in 1962 and van Praagh was Artistic Director from 1972-1974. The Australian Ballet Company was established by the Australian Ballet Foundation and first performed in 1962. In 1970 the Australian Ballet became automonous with the foundation of the Council for the Arts, now the Australia Council. The Company has undertaken a number of overseas tours.
